We always love debunking common myths, and this time we decided to debunk the biggest pipe clogging myth that is circulating the internet.
It’s the holiday season, which means that we are all doing more cooking at home. With more cooking comes more dishes to clean, and more dishes to clean means that there is a great deal more cooking fats, oils and grease being rinsed down the kitchen sink. (This time of the year is a nightmare for water treatment professionals.)
In order to help our water treatment industry professionals, we want to bust one very common grease clogging myth once and for all.
Myth: Pouring liquid soap down the sink after rinsing cooking fats, oils and grease will push it through your pipes.
False! Pouring liquid soap down your drain will not push the rinsed cooking fats, oils and grease through your pipes. Sending hot water down after the soap is also not going to help.
As soon as the grease enters your plumbing it begins to cool very quickly and solidify. This means that it starts hardening around the outside of your pipe and then rapidly collecting and additional food scraps that you send down the drain as well. With this mess happening in your plumbing, it does not take it very long to create a plumbing nightmare—a grease clogged pipe.
Stop with the soap and hot water and instead dispose of the cooking oil and grease properly. Let’s consider this pipe clogging myth officially debunked.
